ABOUT
DAEDALUS
(ded-uh-lus)
We believe that only through collaboration with the entire project team can each project reach its designed and built potential. Whether structural elements are intended to define a project’s architectural aesthetic or are completely concealed beneath the architectural facade, we believe that the structure provides, not hinders, opportunities to mold and shape the architectural vision of each project. Based on that principal, we are dedicated to the collaborative design process, and we strive to deliver engineering excellence, ingenuity, the best possible design aesthetics, cost control and the highest level of service on each and every project.
We are fortunate to team with some of the most creative, innovative, and inspired design professionals and builders of our time. As your structural engineer, we are committed to finding opportunities to contribute to that creativity and innovation throughout the design and construction process. So, it seems only fitting that our ingenuity begin with the naming of our firm.
There are many different interpretations of the classic Greek legend of Daedalus. The one that resonates with us is the relationship between unbridled self-expression and scientific and mathematical discipline; the interaction of art and engineering.
Daedalus, a famous Athenian architect, engineer and inventor and his son Icarus are imprisoned by King Minos. Planning their escape, Daedalus designs and constructs feathered wings to fly to freedom over their prison walls. Well aware of the limitations imposed by the laws of physics Daedalus warns his son that he must not fly too high lest the sun melt the wax that binds their feathered wings. But Icarus, lacking regard for the structure that supports the design, soon forgets his father’s dire warning and soars ever higher toward to the sun causing his wings to lose their integrity, and he plunges into the sea and meets his demise.

At DAEDALUS we strive to help each client aspire to excellence in architecture, stretching the boundaries and challenging the norms of engineering to reach great heights. We endeavor to contribute to the team effort to develop new and unexpected ways to achieve the architectural vision and to meet other project goals, while ensuring our clients understand the limitations imposed by the forces of nature.

Doug is the founder of Daedalus. With over 35 years as a practicing engineer, he is an ardent promoter of engineering as a facilitator for great architecture. His system, rather than component based design approach leads to innovative solutions providing results that are not otherwise considered or thought feasible. Doug takes great care in developing strategies for important project design details while never losing sight or focus on other project values including project budget, schedule, and constructability. He has led many technologically innovative and diverse projects including new building design, seismic evaluation and strengthening, historic renovation and preservation, sustainable design, and implementation of energy dissipation technologies.
A graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, Doug was drawn to California's vibrant design landscape and seismic challenges. Beyond his professional pursuits, Doug is an amateur wood worker, enjoys cooking and great food, and embraces all outdoor activities.

Holding himself to a higher standard is one of Victor’s core traits, and seeing how Daedalus strives for the same in all areas of their work he couldn’t help but be drawn to them. Graduating from San Jose State University with a B.S in Civil Engineering, Victor enjoys working on projects that showcase what it means to be a structural engineer. When not working, Victor can be found off-roading or surfing the waves of Santa Cruz.
